# Error: Phone already taken

Fix the 'phone has already been taken' error on a registration form.

## 🔍 Why This Happens

This is **Shopify's own validation, not an app bug**. When a registration form submits a **Phone number**, Shopify checks whether that number is already attached to another customer. Depending on your store settings, Shopify may block the request and return:

> *"Phone has already been taken."*

✅ **Nothing is broken** — Shopify is just enforcing unique phone numbers per customer.

**Common causes:**

* Testing multiple submissions with the same phone number
* Different people sharing one phone (family or company line)
* Your store requires phone numbers to be unique per customer

**Example:**

> A family shares one landline.
>
> The parent already has a Shopify account with `+1 555-0100`.
>
> Their teenager fills in your registration form using the same number.
>
> Shopify blocks the new account with **"Phone has already been taken"** — even though the form and app worked correctly.

## 🔧 How to solve it

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Open the app > click **Forms** > open the form you want to edit
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Click the **Integration** icon on the left side > enable **Shopify** > click on **Shopify** option

<figure><img src="https://2907469752-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FehM2rz7MmKkWcJmgvJOe%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c815f29546883468f6fb96ec90d519dd56b438c4%2Fscreenshot-integration-shopify-marketing-consent-4.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Find **If customer already exists** > select **Continue and ignore the error**

<figure><img src="https://2907469752-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FehM2rz7MmKkWcJmgvJOe%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-45b4822ba260c5ba357a6a4bcf4e772ccc1d9f9a%2Fscreenshot-ts-trouble-shooting-error-phone-already-taken-3.png?alt=media" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Save
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

#### 🔄 What Changes

<table><thead><tr><th width="282.7332763671875">Before</th><th>After</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Duplicate phone → submission fails</td><td>Duplicate phone → submission continues</td></tr><tr><td>—</td><td>No new customer created, no changes made to the existing one</td></tr></tbody></table>

**Same example, after the fix:** The teenager's submission goes through with no error — but since Shopify skips the duplicate rather than updating anything, the parent's existing customer record stays exactly as it was.

> **⚠️ Note:** This option does **not** update customer info. If you want the submission to update fields like phone, name, or address on the matching customer, use **Continue and update customer information** instead — see Error: [Customer already exists.](https://globosoftware.gitbook.io/globosoftware-docs/troubleshooting/customer-already-exists)
