# Image Options

Let visitors choose by picture instead of by text, with one image tile per option.

The **Image Options** field turns a choice list into a grid of picture tiles. Use it when the picture is the answer — a fabric swatch on a custom furniture request, a frame style on a print order, or the cake design a customer wants for their order.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Image Options** is not included on the Free plan. Its tile in the element picker is grayed out with an upgrade prompt. See [Plans and billing](/settings/plans-and-billing.md).
{% endhint %}

## 🔧 How to Set It

In the form editor, click **Add element**, open the **Selects** category and pick **Image Options**. The field is added and its settings open on the left.

See [Add and arrange elements](/build-your-form/add-and-arrange-elements.md) for the other ways to add a field and how to reorder them.

## 🔧 Settings

Only the settings specific to this field are listed here. **Label**, **Placeholder**, **Description**, **Required**, **Hide label**, **Column width**, **Conditional display** and the rest of the shared settings work the same on every field.

| Setting                | What it does                                                                                                          | Default            |
| ---------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------ |
| **Options** | The list of picture choices. Each row holds a **Label**, a stored **Value**, a **Description** and an uploaded image. | Option 1, Option 2 |
| **Multiple selection** | Lets the visitor pick more than one picture. | off |
| **Limit selections** | Turns on a minimum and maximum number of picks. Appears only when **Multiple selection** is on. | off |
| **Min selections** | The fewest pictures the visitor must choose. Appears only when **Limit selections** is on. | empty |
| **Max selections** | The most pictures the visitor may choose. Appears only when **Limit selections** is on. | empty |
| **Enable tooltip** | Shows each option's **Description** as a tooltip when the visitor hovers over its tile. | off |

### Upload the pictures

Each option row in the **Options** list has a thumbnail slot on its left. Click it, pick an image file, and wait for the thumbnail to appear before you move on — the upload finishes in the background.

A few things to keep in mind:

* Use pictures of the same shape and roughly the same size. Tiles of mixed proportions make the grid look uneven.
* Crop tightly on the thing being chosen. The tiles are small on a phone.
* An option with no picture still works; it shows as a tile with its label only.

## 🔄 How It Works

### What gets saved

The field stores the **Value** of each chosen option, not the image and not the **Label**. Click **Expand** above the options list to see and edit those values; leave the column alone and the label and value match.

Those values are what you see in **Submissions**, in your notification emails, in exports and in connected integrations. With **Multiple selection** on, every chosen value is stored.

{% hint style="info" %}
Conditional logic rules compare against the stored **Value** too. Pick the option from the rule's dropdown rather than typing it. See [Show or hide fields with conditional logic](/build-your-form/conditional-logic.md).
{% endhint %}

## 💡 Example

* **Fabric swatch on a furniture request** ⇒ tiles, single selection
* **Frame style** ⇒ **Enable tooltip** on, so the full name shows on hover
* **Cake design** ⇒ **Multiple selection** on, **Limit selections** on with **Max selections** 2

<br>

## ⚠️ Limits & Notes

### Add a tooltip to an option

Turn on **Enable tooltip**, then click **Expand** above the **Options** list. A third column headed **Description** appears. Whatever you type there is shown when the visitor hovers over that tile, which is a good place for the detail that will not fit under the picture — a material, a size, or a lead time.

### Let visitors choose several

Turn on **Multiple selection** and the tiles behave like checkboxes. Add **Limit selections**, then **Min selections** and **Max selections**, to control how many are allowed.

If the visitor breaks the rule, the form blocks the submission and shows a message naming the number you set — for example *Please choose at least 2 options*, *Please choose at maximum of 3 options*, or *Please choose exactly 2 options* when the minimum and maximum are the same.

## Next steps

* [Image Dropdown](/field-types/selects/image-dropdown.md) — the same idea in a closed list, for longer sets of choices.
* [Color Swatch](/field-types/colors/color-swatch.md) — pick from a palette you define instead of from pictures.
