# Rating level

Ask for a score on a numbered scale, with a word at each end to anchor it.

The **Rating level** field shows a row of numbered buttons with a short piece of text at each end of the scale. It is the field to use for a recommendation score — *How likely are you to recommend us?* running from **Not likely** to **Likely** — or any question where you want a number back rather than a word.

## 🔧 How to Set It

In the form editor, click **Add element**, open the **Ratings** category and pick **Rating level**. The field is added and its settings open on the left.

See [Add and arrange elements](/build-your-form/add-and-arrange-elements.md) for the other ways to add a field and how to reorder them.

## 🔧 Settings

Only the settings specific to this field are listed here. **Label**, **Placeholder**, **Description**, **Required**, **Hide label**, **Column width**, **Conditional display** and the rest of the shared settings work the same on every field.

| Setting                                 | What it does                                            | Default |
| --------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------- | ------- |
| **Level limitation**                    | A slider setting how many buttons appear, from 5 to 10. | 5       |
| The unlabeled box under **Description** | The helper text shown at the high end of the scale. | Likely |

{% hint style="info" %}
On this field, **Description** is not the usual helper text under the input. It is the wording at the left end of the scale, and the unlabeled box directly beneath it is the wording at the right end.
{% endhint %}

### Choose the length of the scale

Drag **Level limitation** to set how many buttons the visitor sees. Five is the default and ten is the maximum.

A ten-point scale is the familiar shape for a recommendation question and gives you room to separate enthusiasts from the merely satisfied. A five-point scale is quicker to answer and fits better on a phone. Pick one and keep it the same across your forms, otherwise the scores are not comparable.

### Anchor both ends

The two helper-text boxes tell the visitor what a low number and a high number mean. Without them, a 3 out of 10 is ambiguous.

Write them as a matched pair: *Not likely* and *Likely*, or *Very difficult* and *Very easy*, or *Too small* and *Too large*. Leave them empty and the scale shows numbers alone.

## 🔄 How It Works

### What the visitor sees

The visitor sees your label, a horizontal row of numbered buttons, and your two pieces of helper text sitting under the ends of the row. Clicking a number selects it; clicking another moves the selection.

### How the answer reaches you

The submission stores the number the visitor picked. Because the answer is a number, conditional rules on this field offer **is greater than** and **is less than** as well as the usual comparisons — which is how you show a follow-up question only after a low score.

<details>

<summary>Ask what went wrong after a low score</summary>

1. Add a **Rating level** field labeled *How likely are you to recommend us?* and set **Level limitation** to 10.
2. Add a **Textarea** labeled *What could we do better?* underneath it.
3. On the **Textarea**, turn on **Conditional display**, leave it on **Show**, and set the rule to: *How likely are you to recommend us?* — **is less than** — `7`.

The follow-up box now appears only for the people who have something to complain about.

## 💡 Example

* **How likely are you to recommend us?** ⇒ **Level limitation** 10, *Not likely* and *Likely* at the ends
* **How difficult was this?** ⇒ **Level limitation** 5

<br>

## ⚠️ Limits & Notes

* **Level limitation** only runs from 5 to 10. There is no three-point or hundred-point version of this field.
* On this field **Description** is not the usual helper text under the input — it is the wording at the low end of the scale, and the unlabeled box beneath it is the wording at the high end.
* Keep the same scale length across your forms. A 7 out of 10 and a 7 out of 5 cannot be averaged together.
